「PLU codes can be found at www.plucodes.com. Listed there are the internationally recognized PLU codes. PLU codes are typically 4 digits in length in the 3000 or 4000 series. These codes identify conventional produce. A fifth digit is used to identify organic or genetically modified produce. This fifth digit is simply used as a prefix to the conventional 4 digit number. A ‘9’ is used to identify organic produce and an ‘8’ is used to identify genetically modified produce. So, a conventional banana would have a PLU of 4011 where an organic banana would have a PLU of 94011.」
