US$ exchange rate to yen had dropped from 260 in late 70s to below 200 in 80s to below 80 in 90s and back to 106 now, but US trade deficit with Japan is still huge.
One may argue the deficit would've been worse hadn't dollar devalued. Still, I seriously doubt beggar-thy-neighbor's effectiveness.
