long ago universty presidents were scholars and hospital superintendents were medical doctors.
then things changed.
in 70s they began to teach hospital management in graduate schools. then hospitals in some countries started hiring professional managers to be chief administrators.
it makes sense. a good doctor can't be a full time administrator at the same time. and doctors are trained in medicine, knowing very little about management.
but it's sad to see the role of university presidents, especially those of private ones, become that of public relations officers and fund raisers. nowadays when a scholar becomes a president, he doesn't think and act independently anymore. he goes along with main stream opinions and goes around advertising and asking for donations.
where's the spirit of a non profit learning and research institution if its president has to do sales?
